Information on Windsor & Eton Riverside Station

The Royal Town of Windsor has two railway stations Windsor & Eton Central opened 1897 by the Great Western Railway and Windsor & Eaton Riverside on 1849 by the London & South Western Railway.
Central station is the terminus of a branch from Slough Main Line station on the Western Region 20 ¾ miles from London Paddington Main Line terminus.
Riverside station terminus is a Grade II listed build near the River Thames and Windsor Castle standing on Datchet Road and is the terminus of a branch from Staines Main Line station on the Southern Region lying 25 ¾ miles to the East of London Waterloo Main Line Terminus.
The Tudor style of Riverside station designed by Sir William Tite as a Royal station is quite different from the French leanings of Central station and is more compact place. Blue engineer’s bricks were used to decorate the outer wall and included the royal initials initials and monograms with those of the LSWR officials of the day and the architect Sir William Tite. A separate room at the end of the building was the former waiting room built for Queen Victoria.
The main booking hall is now a wine bar.
The London & South Western Railway used to run services into Riverside until the Railways Act 1921 grouping when it became the Southern Railway. The line received 3rd rail electrification in the 1930s and in the 1948 Nationalization of the railways the line became part of British Rails Southern Region.
In 1996 the Stagecoach Group Company South West Trains took over the operation of services and the station as part of the privatisation of the British Rail Network with ownership of the line passing to Railtrack then onto Network Rail.
