Information on Windsor & Eton Central Station

Windsor has two railway stations Windsor Central opened 1897 by the Great Western Railway and Windsor Riverside on 1849 by the London & South Western Railway.

Central station is the terminus of a branch from Slough Main Line station on the Western Region 20 ¾ miles from London Paddington Main Line terminus.

Riverside station is the terminus of a branch from Staines Main Line station on the Southern Region and 25 ¾ miles from London Waterloo Main Line Terminus.

Central station is served by a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) shuttle service on the single line which crosses the River Thames on the reach between Romney Lock and Boveney Lock by the Windsor Royal Bridge which is a wrought iron single span bowstring bridge designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel before reaching the long station platform.

The bridge which was given Grade II listing in 1975 is the World’s oldest wrought iron bridge still in regular service.

Either side of the bridge is a 2035 yard brick viaduct.

The former goods yard that stood to the north of the station at ground level has long since gone. It was used to supply the populace of Windsor and the surrounding area with a connection to Windsor Gas Works for supplying coal and the removal of coke and tar.

Freight services stopped in the 1960s and the goods yard was turned in to a coach park.

The station was altered on 17th November 1968 due to the decline in passenger traffic and platforms 3 and 4 were removed, platform 2 was decommissioned on 5th September 1969.

An exhibition called the Royalty and Railways was created in 1982 by British Rail and Madame Tussauds, later to be renamed Royalty and Empire and comprising a full-size replica steam engine ‘The Queen’ which was built at Swindon Works and combined with an ex LBSCR tender and a couple of Pullman carriages forming a replica of the Royal Train.

The station was turned into the Windsor Royal Shopping complex when the exhibition closed in the 1990s and the remaining platform was truncated even further with the station now only able to handle a maximum three car diesel multiple unit.
