Information on Wigan North Western Station

Wigan North Western stands on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Glasgow Central and is one of two stations serving the town of Wigan Greater Manchester England, the station being Wigan Wallgate.

On 3rd September 1832 Wigan’s coal traffic put it on the railway map with a branch from the Liverpool & Manchester Railway opening to Chapel Lane.

Six years later the town of Wigan got a new station with the opening of the line between Wigan and Preston connecting with the line from Parkside built by the North Union Railway. A short Springs Branch also opened at the same time.

The 1838 station lasted for 50 years until it was substantially enlarged.

The London & North Western Railway was formed in 1846 as a result of the progressive amalgamation of various earlier lines including the Grand Junction railway and in collaboration with the Caledonian Railway, through trains were introduced between London Euston and Glasgow.

By 1971 the Victorian-era station buildings were in a sorry run-down state and had to be demolished, the track layout was remodelled and ready for the era of the electric traction hauled passenger and freight stock. The new station was officially opened in July 1972.

On 23rd July 1973 the class 50 diesel locomotives that often worked in pairs on the West Coast Main Line north of Crewe to Preston, Lancaster, Carlisle and Glasgow Central were transferred en-mass to the for mainline passenger duties on the Western Region and replaced by the new Class 86 and Class 87 Electric locomotives following the completion of the northern part of the electrification of the West Coast Main Line.

The current station is a contemporary functional style with six platforms that are above street level, access is via a subway and stairs or lifts.
