Information on Weymouth

Weymouth is a large town in Dorset, England, with a population of around 54,000, 8 miles south of Dorchester and 5 miles north of the Isle of Portland situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast.

Weymouth connects to Portland via the A354 road bridge and together they form the borough of Weymouth and Portland.

The town of Weymouth’s economy depends on its harbour and visitor attractions with the town situated half-way along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site which stretches from Orcombe Point, a coastal feature near Exmouth in Devon to Old Harry Rocks which are chalk stacks located directly east of Studland and to the north of Swanage in Dorset, a distance of 95 miles.

In the centre of town lies Weymouth Harbour which separates Melcombe Regis and Weymouth from each other.

The harbour is home to the cross channel ferries, pleasure boats and private yachts and nearby Portland Harbour located beside the Isle of Portland a limestone tied island 4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide in the English Channel off the coast of Dorset.

Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy where the sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games are to be held.

Weymouth Quay railway station sits by the harbour at the end of the Weymouth Harbour Tramway and saw regular freight and boat trains until September 1987. It was a regular starting point for boat trains, linking the ferries from France and the Channel Islands to London Waterloo mainline station. The last train to see service to the harbour was the Pathfinder Railtour on 2nd May 1999.

The former station buildings are now the offices of Condor Ferries.
