Information on Warrington Central Station
Warrington has two contrasting railway stations Bank Quay on the West Coast Main Line and Central on the Manchester to Liverpool route of the old Cheshire Lines Committee. A third station Bank Quay Low Level which were platforms 5, 6 & 7 running below the West Coast Main Line of Bank Quay station closed on 9 September 1963although its Merseyside route remains open for freight trains.
The ex Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) station at Warrington lies on what used to be a loop from the direct Manchester to Liverpool route and was opened on 1 August 1873. The station sits halfway between the two cities and comprises of two long platforms which follow an over bridge.
The main buildings are on the north side of the station facing away from the town, with most of it rented out to small businesses as the former booking office and other facilities were relocated to a more modern building on the town side of the station.
The new entrance at street level has a small ramp or six steps up to the relocated booking office with further steps leading to the platforms. Lifts were installed in June 2008 making access for the disabled. Previously layouts only had stair access.
Other facilities include a customer services officer, toilets, waiting rooms a newsagents and a coffee stall.
Outside the station there is a car park and taxi rank and Warrington Bus Interchange is also close by
East of Centrals platforms stands the former adjoining Cheshire Lines Warehouse is being transformed into flats having been used for many years as a car park.

Eight trains an hour pass through the station as follows
Northern Rail
- Operate two suburban stopping services per hour to Liverpool Lime Street via Widnes
- Two suburban stopping service per hour towards Manchester Oxford Road via Irlam – late services also terminate at Warrington from either Manchester or Liverpool
First TransPennine Express
- Operate hourly non-stop service to Liverpool Lime Street and an hourly express service towards Scarborough via Leeds and York.
- Daily service to Newcastle, Middlesborough and Hull all via Leeds Late services run short to York only
East Midlands Trains
- Operate an hourly service to Liverpool Lime Street calling at Widnes and Liverpool South Parkway only.
- Hourly express service to Norwich via Nottingham late services run to Nottingham only.
