Information on Warrington Bank Quay Station
Warrington has two contrasting railway stations Bank Quay on the West Coast Main Line and Central on the Manchester to Liverpool route of the old Cheshire Lines Committee. A third station Bank Quay Low Level which were platforms 5, 6 & 7 running below the West Coast Main Line of Bank Quay station closed on 9 September 1963although its Merseyside route remains open for freight trains.
Bank Quay station opened in 1868 after Dallam Lane station built in 1831 on the branch of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway was closed in favour of a station on the Grand Junction line to Birmingham.
A modest railway station of the earlier British Rail rebuilds with a similar pattern to the one at Wigan with a single-storey entrance at street level containing a ticket office and information office and then through a subway with access to two island platforms at a higher level by lifts or the stairs.
The West Coast Main Line crosses the Manchester Ship Canal and then the River Mersey on its south approach to the station. Between the station and the river on the Up side stands Warrington Yard, with part of the route being used for exchanging traffic with the Widnes Line and a connection to the nearby Traction Maintenance Depot.
As well as passenger trains the Bank Quay area also sees large volumes of oil, coal and other bulk freight movements.
The huge Unilever detergent manufacturing plant stands next to and overlooking the station site and is Warrington’s best known landmark.
