Information on Wakefield Westgate Station

Wakefield has two railway station Westgate and Kirkgate with the former being the principle station for the City.  The station only has two platforms linked by a bridge but has all the basic facilities including a cafe, information kiosk, ticket office and a shop. Vending machines that sell drinks and snacks stand on the platforms. A taxi rank and cash point can be found outside the main entrance. The station is managed by National Express East Coast and handles a substantial amount of passenger traffic.

The station at Westgate originally opened in 1867 but was rebuilt in the 1960s by the Great Northern and MS&LR railways and lies 172 miles from London Kings Cross on the East Coast Main Line on the western edge of the main city centre of Wakefield in West Yorkshire England.

Platform 2 houses the sculpture by Leeds based artist Charles Quick ‘A Light Wave’ which comprises a series of wooden planks in the form of waves which are lit by rippling light at night.

There are plans for a £1.4 million regeneration scheme for the entire Westgate area of Wakfield and this would involve moving the station south down the line which would allow it to have longer platforms thus enabling express  trains to pull into the station while local trains are terminating or stopping. With two trains occupying the platforms at the same time passenger capabilities and train numbers would be enhanced.

The former goods yard and dairy is to be divided with one half being a railway heritage centre and the other half having a station hotel, restaurants and new housing.
