Information on Wakefield Kirkgate Station

Wakefield has two railway station Westgate and Kirkgate with the former being the principle station for the City. Wakefield Kirkgate station is older than the nearby Westgate Mainline station and is currently an unstaffed station and served by mainly local trains. The station stands on the Hallam, Pontefract and Huddersfield lines.
Standing further from the centre of the City of Wakefield, the original Kirkgate station was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1840 and remained the only station in Wakfield until Westgate was opened in 1867. The present station building dates from 1857 with a long stone frontage where the two-story conventional offices are linked by a facade with a decorative centre station entrance.
A subway leads from platform 1 to the island platforms 2 and 3.
In 1972 some demolition work took place removing some of the island buildings and the roof which covered the whole station, all that survives is a wall and the original ironwork canopy.
Network Rail demolished the former goods warehouse in January 2008 to make way for a new depot.
Stories of paranormal activity circulate about a ghostly figure of a woman in a Victorian dress seen wandering the subway between platforms 1 and 2.
The station is managed by Network Rail and leased to Northern Rail.
