Information on Southampton

Southampton City lies 62 miles southwest of the City of London and 19 miles northwest of Portsmouth and is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire.

Southampton has a deep connection with the British-American owned British operated shipping company Cunard Line that has been a leading operator of passenger ships on the North Atlantic for over a century, their fleet of ships are the only passenger vessels to be registered in the City of Southampton and thus wear the name of “Southampton” on the stern.

Cunard’s European office is located on Terminus Terrace the former Southampton Terminus railway station and the company has first rights to the Queen Elizabeth II Passenger Terminal for its fleet of ships.

Southampton port was the point of departure of the famous ship the Mayflower which set sail on 16th September 1620 carrying the English Separatists (The Pilgrims) to Plymouth Massachusetts, later to become the Plymouth Colony.

In 1912 the RMS Titanic sailed from the Port of Southampton on her ill-fated journey, and in 1938 the docks became the home to the flying boats of the Imperial Airways an early British commercial long range transport company that operated from 1924 to 1939 serving parts of Europe and the Empire routes of South Africa, India and the far East.

In 1968 the Southampton Container Terminal opened and continues to expand handling 18 deep water container ships into the terminal each week.

Southampton was also birth place of The Supermarine Spitfire where it was designed and developed as an evolution of the Schneider trophy winning seaplanes of the 20s and 30s.

Southampton has good transport link with the rest of the country, the M27 Motorway linking places along the south coast of England which runs just north of the city while the M3 Motorway links the city to the City of London, plus a link to the A34 road at Winchester with the Midlands and North.  The M271 Motorway spur from the M27 Motorway links up with the Western Docks and city centre.

There are also direct passenger rail links into Southampton’s main station Southampton Central, with east routes towards Portsmouth and north to Winchester, the Midlands and London Waterloo, and westwards to Bornemouth, Salisbury, Bristol and Cardiff and freight trains in and out of the docks and container terminals.

Just north of the city in the town of Eastleigh is Southampton Airport offering flights to the UK and near European destinations and is connected by rail into its own station Southampton Airport Parkway Railway Station and by bus services.

Ferry services operate from Town Quay, two car ferries and a fast catamaran passenger ferry to East Cowes and Cowes on the Isle of Wight which are operated by Red Funnel.

Southampton is twinned with:
  • Le Harve - France.
  • Rems-Murr-Kreis - Germany.
  • Kalisz - Poland.
Southampton is also a sister sity of:
  • Hampton - USA.
  • Qingdao - China.
And sister port of:
  • Busan - South Korea.
