Information on Southampton Central Station

The London & Southampton Railway project opened throughout on 11th May 1840 arriving on the same course as the River Itchen and used a former terminus in the old dock area close to the Royal Pier. Seven years later it was joined by the Southampton & Dorchester Railway which departed along the route of the River Test via a station latter to become Southampton West in 1895. The station was enlarged in the 1930s and in 1965 British Rail rebuilt the station.
Southampton Terminus station closed to passenger traffic on 5th September 1966 but the main station building designed by Sir William Tite still exists today and houses the Mint Casino. The covered concourse to the rear of the station building also stands and covers an area now used as a car park.
Although the platforms of Southampton station have been demolished a line still passes the site and onto the Eastern Docks carrying freight and the occasional boat trains.
In 1866 a coastal line was added from Southampton and now all three main routes have suburban stations, Millbrook, Redbridge and Totton along the Bournemouth Line, Bitterne on the Portsmouth Line and St Denys & Swaythling along the inland line.
Southampton Central station lies on the Wessex Main Line, the South Western Main Line and the West Coastway Line but despite its name it is quite a distance from the city centre.
The station is managed by South West Trains who operates most services to London Waterloo, although the station is also used by CrossCountry trains to Birmingham and beyond, First Great Western run services to Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central and Southern whoopertae services between Southampton and London Victoria vi the South Coast and Gatwick Airport and also to London Bridge avoiding Gatwick Airport.
There are 4 platforms all of which are split into two sections, A and B which allows two services to occupy the platforms at the same time.
