Information on Southampton Airport
Southampton Airport is the 20th largest airport in the United Kingdom and is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates six other UK airports, Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. BAA is itself owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group.
Southampton Airport is located in Eastleigh 6km from Southampton on the outskirts of the City Centre, and 30 km from Portsmouth. The airport is easily accessed from Junction 5 of the M27 motorway, the M3 just a few minutes away, providing a fast route to London with the A33/A34 linking to Oxford and the Midlands.
During 2007 Southampton saw a passenger increase of 2.8% on the previous year with the airport handling 1,965,686 passengers, flying them to over 40 different destinations in the UK, Europe and the Channel Islands.
Southampton Airport is served by Southampton Airport Parkway on the South Western Mainline from London Waterloo and Winchester to Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole. After alighting from your train there is only a 2 minute walk from the platforms of Southampton Airport Parkway to the terminal building of Southampton Airport.
Southampton is famous for the Supermarine Spitfire as the first test flights were conducted at the airport in 1936 and in 2004 the event was commemorated with the erection of a near full scale model of K5054, the prototype Spitfire at the road entrance to Southampton airport.
Five restored Spitfires took off from Southampton Airport at 16.30 GMT on March 5 2006 to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire, the precise same time as the test flights back in 1936.
