Information on Shrewsbury Station

Shrewsbury station stands at the junction of lines from Newport, Machynlleth, Chester, Crewe and Wolverhampton and is 158 miles from London Euston Main Line terminus. The current station was built in 1848-1849 and was the work of architect T.K. Penson.

The station started life as a two-storey building but was converted to three-storeys by R.E. Johnson in an impressive 1903-1904 operation which supported the original building while approach court yard was lowered to permit the addition of a below ground floor level.

Shrewsbury’s very impressive Tudor/Jacobean stone building has a gabled end section and a clock tower. The battlement parapet, tall chimneys and decorated windows all add to the fine exterior. A subway leads to the island platforms which extend over the River Seven.

At the south end of the station stands the largest surviving mechanical signal box in Britain and the 2nd largest in the world, namely the Severn Bridge Junction signal box built by the LNWR in 1904. The building which is now listed houses a frame accommodating 180 levers and stands at the junction of the same name.  The box controls the southern end of Shrewsbury railway station, Severn Bridge Junction and English Bridge Junction.

Shrewsbury also has a Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD) constructed in 2008 on the former rarely-used permanent way depot in Coleham, Shrewsbury at Sutton Bridge Junction approximately 500m south of Shrewsbury railway station. The depot was constructed as part of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management Sytem) project on the Cambrian Line. The depot will be the base for Network Rail’s Class 97/3s (former Class 37 locomotives.
