Information on Sheffield Station

Sheffield station formally known as Pond Street and later Sheffield Midland is a railway station and tram stop in the central of Sheffield in South Yorkshire in Northern England.
Pond Street opened in 1870 and was rebuilt in 1904 by Midland Railway Architect Charles Trubshaw using a warm reddish stone for the long arcaded frontage with a mixture of single and double arches and decorative stone finals above.
Sheffield station along with Pond Street Goods Depot opened on a damp and cold day without and celebrations and was built on a New Line which ran between Grimesthorpe Junction on the former Sheffield and Rotherham Railway and Tapton Junction just north of Chesterfield. This new line replaced the Midland Railway’s previous route to London, which had run from Sheffield Wicker Station via Rotherham. The original buildings can still be seen on the island platforms 2 to 5.
In 1905 and at a cost of £215,000 that station was given two extra platforms and a new frontage, a new island platform was created out of the old platform 1, a new platform 1 was built along with a new station entrance. Two train sheds spanned platforms one above 5 and 6, the other above 1 and 2 but war damage saw these removed in 1956 and replaced with low-level awnings.
The Class 45 and Class 46 diesel locomotives also known as Peaks arrived in the 1960s and put into passenger and freight services.
In 1965 Sheaf House was built adjacent to the station, housing the Sheffield Division headquarters of British rail until early 2006 when it was demolished as part of the “Gateway to Sheffield” regeneration scheme.
1972 saw the station track layout remodelled and resignalled and in 1984 British rail introduced the InterCity 125 High Speed Trains to serve Sheffield on the Midland Main Line into London St Pancras.
The station was flooded on 21 December 1991 when the River Sheaf which flows under it burst its banks and a log which was part of the debris now forms a plague on platform 5 commemorating the event.
In 2002 major regeneration work including a new footbridge linking the station with the new Supertram stop, new platform surfaces, revamped passenger halls, shops, ticket facilities, and destination boards were carried out by Midland Mainline, they also remodelled Sheaf Square outside the station and incorporating a new large open pedestrian space, water features and sandblasting the station front.
Midland Mainline amalgamated with East Midlands Trains on 11 November 2007.
Sheffield’s current station layout is 9 platforms numbered 1 to 8 and 2C.
Sheffield also has a tram system introduced on 21 March 1994 and currently operated by Stagecoach.
