Information on Scarborough Station

Near the town and less than half a mile from the sea is Scarborough Terminus station which was opened in 1845 by the North Midland Railway and was the work of architect G.T. Andrews. The station has three main platforms plus two long bays with access via the 1845 block with its end pavilions and high clock tower and two inverted ‘Vee’ roof spans.

Scarborough station lies 42 miles east of York and is one of the eastern termini on the North TransPennine route operated by First TranPennine Express. Its is also at the Northern end of the Yorkshire Coast Line.

Scarborough Londesborough station has the longest station seat in the world at 152 yards (139m) in length and is used for the steam excursion summer specials from York hauled by 4472 Flying Scotsman except when the locomotive is in for servicing and or restoration its duties are taken over by other famous engines which have included 60009 Union of South Africa and 34067 Tangmere.

There is a working turntable for the steam locomotives.

Until 1965 the station also served the line from Whitby and until 1950 from Pickering.
Scarborough was previously known as Scarborough Central to distinguish it from Scarborough Londesborough Road on the York to Scarborough Line.

Scarborough provides the perfect seaside holiday venue for people of all ages with its safe beaches and numerous other attractions, and is divided into two bays – North Bay and South Bay by the Castle Headland, with both bays overlooking the sea and close the town centre and railway station.

The North Bay contains holiday chalets and fun parks and includes the Peasholm Park, Miniature North Bay Railway, Scarborough Sea Life Centre and the Sand’s development attractions.

Scarborough is also known as the “Queen of the Yorkshire Coast” and situated with Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast to the North and Filey and Bridlington to the South with York inland to the West and only an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train.
