Information on Salisbury Station

Located 83.75 miles southwest of London Waterloo Main Line station at the crossing of the West of England Main Line and the Wessex Main Line lies the station of Salisbury serving the City of Salisbuty Wiltshire.

The first trains to serve Salisbury arrived from Eastleigh in Hampshire in 1847 and used a station at Milford on the south-east side of the city

This station was used by the LSWR until 1859 when an extension of the Salisbury & Yeovil lines reached the site of the current station. A two-storey block in brick with decorated windows and parapet, leading to a single platform and was the work of the London & South Western Railway’s architect Sir William Tite.

Sir William Tite was also responsible for the station buildings at Vauxhall (Nine Elms), Southampton Terminus, Gosport, Windsor Riverside for the London & South Western railway, Minories and Blackwall for the London & Blackwall Railway, Carnforth station, Carlisle Citadel station, the majority of stations on the Caledonian & Scottish Central railways including Edinburgh and Perth, Barnes, Barnes Bridge, Chiswick and Kew Bridge railway stations and stations between Yeovil and Exeter including Axminster and the now demolished Honiton.

The GWR also had a terminus station built in 1856 on the end of the Wilts, Somerset & Weymouth Railway.

In 1900 the LSWR remodelled its station to produce the present platform formations and this completely over shadowed the modest GWR terminus.

Both Salisbury stations adjoin Fisherton Street about half a mile from the city centre, the active ex-LWSR complex being reached via South Western Road. The GWR trains were diverted to the SR from 1932 the site then became a goods depot until 1991, the yard was also used as a base for British Rail’s exhibition trains.

In 1992 South West Trains opened a Traction maintenance Depot (TMD) situated on the north side of Salisbury railway station to maintain its fleet of 30 three-car Class 159s and 11 two-car Class 158 Diesel Multiple Units used on the West of England Main Line.

Brunel’s passenger buildings are still in use today as offices by non-railway business. English Heritage gave the station building a Grade II listing status in October 2008.
