Information on Rugby Station

The modest market town of Rugby was turned in to an important rail centre following the opening of the London & Birmingham’s Railway Main Line through Rugby in 1838 followed in 1840 by the Midland Counties route from Leicester and then a year later the Rugby & Stamford route which also included Peterborough traffic. Rugby ended up with nine radiating lines as the West Coast Main Line, Great Central’s London Extension and the LNWR branch towards Leamington made up the figure of eight configuration.
Rugby’s first makeshift station at Old station square was replaced in 1840 when the Midland Counties Railway completed its 11 Arch Avon Viaduct to join the L&B route. Further improvements were needed and in 1886 the LNWR constructed what is the present main line station at Rugby today. Only the West Cost Main Line is left connecting London Euston to Birmingham New Street and the North West.
The station which stands 82 miles north of London Euston and 319 miles south of Glasgow Central and has one of the longest platforms in the United Kingdom.
The original large steel and glass roof which covered the station platforms and tracks on each side and lasted more than 100 years was finally replaced in 2000 with a modern ‘gull wing’ roof, the old one had become unsafe.
In September 2006 work began on modernising the West Coast Main Line with major track restructuring at Rugby to allow higher running speeds through the station, three new platforms were also added along with a new ticket office and entrance and by late 2008 all the work was completed, allowing non-stop trains to run through Rugby at 125 mph.
