Information on Ramsgate Station

Ramsgate railway station was built between 1927-1926 by Edwin Maxwell Fry and is listed as a Grade II building and is possibly the finest New Classical railway station in southern England. It serves the seaside town of Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet in Kent and lies 79 ¼ miles east of London Victoria Main Line railway terminus on the Chatham Main Line. Like Margate, Ramsgate is a member of the ancient confederation of Cinque Ports.

Ramsgate harbour has the unique distinction of being the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom.

Ramsgate got its first railway route on 13 April 1846 when the South Eastern Railway opened its route from Ashford. On 1 December 1846 the line was extended to Margate Sands. Ramsgate Town was a terminal station and occupied a site on the southern seaward side of its present location.

For seventeen years the South Eastern railway supplied all the traffic into Ramsgate until 5 October 1863 when it was joined by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway from Margate. The London, Chatham and Dover Railway had a station at Ramsgate Harbour which was better placed than its rivals but was constricted in space and had a 1 in 75 tunnel approach. On 2 July 1926 a Southern Railway scheme closed both stations in favour of the one that serves Ramsgate today.

Following the restructuring of the railway lines in Ramsgate the former route and tunnel was put to use in 1926 by the Ramsgate Tunnel Railway. The route was also known as the Tunnel Railway, Ramsgate Cliff Railway, Ramsgate Underground Railway and the World Scenic Railway, but during the 1960s passenger numbers fell and in the 1965 following a train wreck the owners decided to close the line.

The Isle of Thanet also had an inter-urban tramway, an electric tram service which opened on 4 April 1901. The line commenced in Canterbury Road, Westbrook on the western edge of Margate and ran along the sea front before turning inland through Cliftonville and across the Isle of Thanet to the town of Broadstairs where it ran along the High Street and onto Dumpton Park Road with its final stop in Ramsgate terminating next to the South Eastern Main Line Railway Station. Running on the 10.84 miles of track and sporting a maroon and cream livery were double-deck tram cars from the St Louis Car Co in American, initially with 20, but another 20 followed in July 1901 with the fleet finally numbering 60 by 1927, the same year the livery changed to crimson and ivory. The line closed on 27 March 1937 after pressure from the local Council in favour of East Kent’s buses.
