Information on Preston Station
Preston is a major railway station on the West Coast Main Line 209 miles from London Euston which opened in 1880. The first railway engines arrived when the North Union Railway linked the town of Preston with the Liverpool & Manchester line from 31 October 1838 and from 1940 three more railways began to serve Preston, these included the Preston& Wyre, the Lancaster & Preston Junction and the modest Preston & Longridge which was more concerned with carrying stone than passengers. The Bolton & Preston Railway joined them in 1843.
The 1838 North Union station gradually put the other Preston stations out of business and in 1849 it absorbed the East Lancashire Railway’s traffic.
In 1880 the station was rebuilt by the LNW and Lancashire & Yorkshire users, with a direct ramp access from a new Fishergate Bridge via the ticket office situated on a small concourse, this lead to a large InterCity island platform numbered 3 and 4with bay platforms at the south end. Footbridges either side of the ramp lead to the other platforms, with the eastern footbridge leading to an alternative entrance to the station on Butler Street, this gives closer access to Preston city centre and station car park. A subway also leads to all eight platforms giving step free access and at the south end of platform 7 another entrance serves the station car park.
Although there a eight platforms only six are in use as six through platforms, two bays and the other two for emergency use only.
The island of platforms 3 and 4 is very wide with a long series of buildings which house many services and amenities including a newsagent, food outlets and licensed restaurant, toilets, a large waiting room and a travel centre and coffee shop. Additional shops can be found on platforms 1 and 2. Dot matrix display screens giving passenger travel information can be found on all platforms.
