Information on Plymouth

Plymouth is a city and unitary authority area on the coast of Devon, England about 190 miles south west of the City of London and lies between the River Plym to the east and the River Tamar to the west, both rivers flow into the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound.

Plymouth Sound also known locally as The Sound is a bay at Plymouth, its south west and south east corners are Penlee Point a coastal headland to the southeast of the village of Rame in Cornwall and Wembury Point on the south coast of Devon, a distance of about 3 nautical miles. Its northern limit is Plymouth Hoe known locally as Hoe which is a large south facing open public space adjacent to and above the low limestone cliffs that form the seafront and giving a north-south distance of 3 nautical miles.

The Sound has three water entrances, the marine entrance is from the English Channel to the south, with a deep-water channel to the west of the breakwater. There are two freshwater inlets, one from the northwest in the River Tamar via the Hamoaze and Devonport Dockyard, the largest naval dockyard in Western Europe. The other from the northeast is the River Plym.

In addition to ships of the Royal Navy, Plymouth is also host to large commercial vessels including ferries to France and Spain which use the Sound from Millbay Docks where there are two large deepwater docks, one is part-owned by Brittany Ferries. The ferry company’s UK headquarters are based  here and they have operated a ferry service from the docks to Roscoff on the north coast of Brittany in France and Santander on the north coast of Spain since 1973, with ferries departing and arriving daily from March to late October, with less frequent services during the winter months.

In 2003 the terminal building was renovated and the dock expanded to accommodate the new 40,000 ton flagship Pont-Aven of Brittany Ferries’ and she shares the dock with the Armorigue which replaced the Pont L’Abbe. The Bretagne ferry that is assigned to Portsmouth visits Millbay during the winter months.

Since 1862 Millbay has been home to The Plymouth RNLI All-Weather and Inshore Lifeboats.

Plymouth is twinned with:
  • Brest - France.
  • Gdynia - Poland.
  • Novorossiysk - Russia.
  • San Sebastian -Spain.
  • Plymouth, Massachusetts - USA.
