Perth railway station was designed by architect Sir William Tite for the Scottish Central Railway and built in 1847 it has seven platforms of which five are through platforms. Often referred to as ‘The Gateway to the Highlands’ serving the ‘Fair City’ of Perth its south routes serve Glasgow and Edinburgh via Stirling and to Edinburgh over the single line to Ladybank and the north Central Highland route to Inverness.  Another route in the direction of the Tay to Dundee and onto the Granite City of Aberdeen.

In 1865 the station was extended, then altered in 1893 and 1985.

Perth railway station is located on the south western edge of the city, the bus station is located close by but separated by in the inner ring round, there are plans to remodel the railway station and move the bus station alongside the railway station. Perth is the 28th busiest railway station in Scotland handling over 642,000 passengers per annum.

Stagecoach has its headquarters in Perth.

Perth also has a small inland port 30 miles from the North Sea for freight purposes only and which handles coastal and dry bulk ships up to 90 metres in Length, handling animal feedstuffs, fertilisers, timber, chemicals and ore.

  • 1 train every 2 hours between Perth and Inverness.
  • 1 train every hour between Perth and Glasgow (from Aberdeen).
  • 1 train every hour between Perth and Aberdeen.
  • 1 train every 2 hours between Perth and Edinburgh.
  • 1 train every day between Perth and London
  • 1 overnight sleeper service to London
