Information on Norwich Station

Norwich uses to have four passenger stations, Victoria terminus of the 1849 Eastern Union Railway, City which the Eastern & Midlands opened in 1882, Trowse near the junction of the Ipswich and Cambridge routes and the surviving Norwich Thorpe. Norwhich Thorpe took over Victoria’s trains in 1916, the Trowse passengers in 1939 and City which closed in 1959.
The Norwich & Yarmouth railway opened on 1 May 1844 and was Norfolk’s first railway linking the coast to Norwich where a combined station and headquarters stood on what was later the goods depot site.
On 30 July 1945 the Norwich and Brandon Railway reached Trowse and was linked with N&Y later that year via a crossing of the River Wensum, now spanned by a swing bridge unique in carrying the 25kV wires of the electrified route from London Liverpool Street to Norwich.
The surviving station at Norwich lies in a bend of the River Wensum and not far from the City centre, its impressive frontage designed by Great Eastern Railway’s architects John Wilson and W.N. Ashbee, and brought into use in 1866.
The main two-storey building in warm red brick construction supplemented by varied stonework has a porte-cochere wit h parapet above, an elaborate clock pediment fronting a pavilion roof. Inside the booking hall which has a pleasantly decorated ceiling leads to the main concourse where a six section roof covers part of the six platforms.
The station concourse was extended and the platform approaches remodelled with the arrival of the electrification wires in 1987, while these works were carried out Norwich closed and Trowse railway station was brought back into service as the terminus of the line but closed again after Norwich reopened. The loco sheds that stood to the right of the station were demolished and a new maintenance facility was built alongside the link between the London and Yarmouth lines.
