Information on Newquay International Airport


Newquay Cornwall Airport is the main commercial airport for Cornwall, South West England and lies 4.6 Miles (7.4 Km) Northeast  of Newquay on Cornwall's north coast.

Originally opened in 1933 as a civillian facility, but was requisitioned at the outbreak of World War II and named RAF Trebelzue. IN 1943 after expansion the base was renamed RAF St Mawgan. THe facility was then handed over to the USSAF where a number of improvements were made which included a new control tower and expansion of the runway. In  1947 the base closed to maintenance and didn't reopen until 1951 when it ws to become a Coastal Command base and home to the following squadrons: 22 Sqn., 203 Sqn. (later renamed 201), 228 Sqn.(later renamed 206), both Long Range Reconnaissance Squadrons, 42 Sqn., 7 Sqn., 265 Sqn. (Royal Auxillary Air Force) and 1 Sqn. (RAF Regiment).

The runway at Newquay International Airport is able to take the very largest and fastest of civil and military aircraft as it was built and maintained for decades as a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) strategic nuclear bomber base.

With the departure of the USAAF and the RAF Cornwall has been left with a well equiped facility and a runway capable of handling aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747

Nearby attractions include the Eden Project and the Tate St Ives. the city of Truro is also close by.
