Information on Newcastle Station
Newcastle Central Station or Newcastle railway station stands 268 ¾ miles north of London King’s Cross at the junction of the East Coast Mainline and Sunderland and Carlisle lines. It is the mainline railway station in the City of Newcastle Upon Tyne and a principle stop on the East Coast Main Line.
Opened in 1850 and designed by John Dobson for the York Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company later to become the North Eastern Railway (NER) following a merger with other companies in 1854. It was constructed by Robert Stephenson and officially opened on29 August 1850 by Queen Victoria.
The station has a classical styled frontage, the train sheds have a distinctive roof with four curved arched spans, three from the original design and a fourth designed by William Bell and added when the station was extended in the 1890s.
The Central station concourse gives access to the Metro Urban Transport Network also known as the Tyne and Wear Metro or just Metro. This electrified railway rapid transport system was authorised by an Act of 1973 and opened in sections between 1980 and 1984. It took over the former electrified NER routes of 1904 and the LNER in 1934 to provide services over a route from Bank Foot to South Shields and on the Coastal loop out through Tynemouth and Whitley bay.
The Metro consists of two lines as follows:
Green Line: Newcastle Airport to South Hylton via Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, Gateshead and Sunderland.
Yellow Line: St James to South Shields via North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley bay then looping back on itself and going south via the city centre, Gateshead and Jarrow,
The area is also rich in rail museums at Beamish, Monkwearmouth, Wylam and Middle Engine Lane.
Newcastle Central has 12 platforms with Mainline services operated by CrossCountry, National Express East Coast, First TransPennine Express and Northern Rail as follows:
CrossCountry southbound to Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Plymouth and Reading.
Northbound to Edinburgh and Glasgow
National Express East Coast southbound to York, Doncaster and London
Northbound to Edinburgh and Glasgow
First TransPennine to Manchester
Northern Rail services across the NorthEast and Cumbria to Carlisle via MetroCentre and to Middlesborough via Sunderland.
