Information on Newcastle

The City Of Newcastle upon Tyne is a metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear and in the historical and traditional County of Northumberland in North East England. Situated on the North bank of the River Tyne, Newcastle as is often shortened, developed from a Roman settlement called Pons Aelius, although it owes its name to the wooden castle of Robert II, eldest son of William the Conqueror that was built in the city in 1080.

Newcastle has access to an International ferry terminal, the only one in the region which is based at Royal Quays, North Shields and provides limited connections to the Netherlands and Norway.

North Shields is located 8 miles east of the City of Newcastle and linked via the Tyne and Wear Metro to Newcastle City Centre and other destinations in Tyne & Wear including, Whitley Bay, Newcastle Airport and Sunderland.

The MS King of Sandinavia is a cruiseferry operated and owned by the Danish shipping company DFDS Seaways and sails on the route from Newcastle to Ijmuiden a city in the Dutch province of North Holland and the main town of the municipality of Velsen. Ijmuiden lies about 10 miles north of Haarlem.

The MS King of Scandinavia was built in 1987 as MS Nils Holgersson by Schichau Unterweser Bremehaven in West Germany for TT-Line shipping Company based in Germany. She transfereed to Brittany Ferries between 1993 and 2006 and was renamed MS Val de Loire for use on the English Channel until February 2006 when she was transferred to the DFDS Seaways shipping company.

Newcastle is twinned with the following Cities:
  • Atlanta - United States of America.
  • Bergen - Norway.
  • Gelsenkirken - Germany.
  • Groningen - Netherlands.
  • Haifa -Israel.
  • Nancy - France.
