Information on Margate Station
Margate railway station is a grade II listed building constructed in 1926 by Edwin Maxwell Fry, and serves the seaside resort town of Margate within the Thanet district of East Kent. Margate lies 38.1 miles (61.3 km) east-northeast of Maidstone, along the North Foreland of the Coastline of the United Kingdom. Margate’s history is closely tied to the sea as it was a ‘limb’ of Dover in the ancient confederation Cinque Ports.
Cinque Ports is a historic series of coastal towns in Kent and Sussex, at the eastern end of the English Channel where the crossing to the continent is narrowest and was originally formed for military and trade purposes, but is now entirely ceremonial.
The name is Norman French for ‘Five Port’, the five being Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich, these inturn are supported by the two ancient towns of Rye and Winchelsea, whose councils traditionally maintained defence contingents for the realm of England.
There are also seven other members of the Confederation which are considered to be Limbs of the other towns, these are Lydd (Limb of New Romney), Folkestone, Faversham and Margate (Limbs of Dover, Deal and Ramsgate (Limbs of Sandwich) and Tenterden (Limb of Rye).
Margate got its first trains on 1 December 1846 when the SER line from Ashford reached a terminus called Margate Sands. Its second railway dates from 5 October 1863 when the LC&DR backed Kent Coast Line reached the present site then known as Margate West. It had been intended to continue from the latter, but the two routes were linked instead. Soon after its formation the Southern Railway obtained a Ministry of Transport Order permitting rationalization of the whole Thanet area. The implementation of this from 2 July 1926 closed the SER route from Ramsgate to Margate Sands terminus in favour of the ex LC&DR line along the coast, and concentrated all traffic on a new station, the present Margate station. A smaller station
