Manchester Piccadilly stands on London Road in the Piccadilly district of Manchester and was originally opened on 8 May 1842, initially known as Store Street Station and also Top Bank Station. It was the terminus of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway, along with the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway whom they shared the station with from August 1844.  The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway which formed in 1847, later to become the Great Central Railway, at the same time the station was renamed as London Road.

Further platforms were opened on 1 August 1849 with a rebuild in 1866 an extension to the station was opened on 16 May 1881.  The station was then remodelled and reopened on 12 September 1960 and renamed as Manchester Piccadilly for the new London Midland Region and its electric train services to London. Manchester Piccadilly was modernised between 1998 and 2000 at a cost of over £27 million.

Manchester Piccadilly serves intercity routes to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, South Wales and the South Coast of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow Central in Scotland and routes throughout Northern England. It is one of the seventeen stations managed by Network Rail, it is the busiest station in the United Kingdom outside of London and the largest and busiest of the five city centre railway stations in Central Manchester, the others being Manchester Victoria, Salford Centre, Deansgate and Manchester Oxford Road.
When passengers alight they are greeted with the original iron train shed and its decorative cast iron columns of 1842, passengers arriving by foot through the main entrance will see the original 1842 Railway Crest.



The Fairfield Street entrance at basement level, serves the car park, taxi rank and the Manchester Metrolink station. Manchester Piccadilly sits above street level on steel girders, with its modern large concourse, twelve platforms, ticket office, information points, seating, modern timetables, public toilets, shops and food and drink outlets and a First Class Lounge for Virgin Trains.

The Manchester Metrolink which terminates below Manchester Piccadilly mainline railway station currently operates services to Bury, Altrincham and Eccles.
