Things to do in Manchester
While in Manchester you might want to look around the City and its variety of architectural styled buildings ranging from Victorian to contemporary architecture, with widespread use of red brick throughout the city. Manchester used to be a global centre for the cotton trade and just outside of the City Centre you will find a large number of ex cotton mills, some are still untouched since they closed while others have been redeveloped into apartments and offices. One of the most important Victorian Buildings in England is the Town Hall in Albert Square which was built in the Gothic revival style and has been used many times in films as a replacement location for the Palace of Westminster where filming is not permitted.
Between the 1960s and 1970s a number of skyscrapers were built including the CIS Tower which is the tallest and located near Manchester Victoria Station, the Beetham Tower which includes a Hilton Hotel, restaurant and apartments, the Piccadilly Tower behind Manchester Picadilly Station and the Green Building opposite Oxford Station which is a pioneering eco friendly housing project and almost unique in the UK.
There are over 135 parks, gardens and open spaces within the city including the award winning Heaton Park which covers 610 acres (250 ha) of parkland and is one of the largest municiple parks in Europe and can be found in the North of the city. There are also two large squares that hold many of Manchester's public monuments, Prince Albert, Bishop James Fraser, Oliver Heywood, William Ewart Gladstone and John Bright can all be found in Albert Square and Queen Victoria, Robert Peel, James Watt and the Duke of Wellington monuments can be found in the Piccadilly Gardens. The cenotaph in St Peter's Square is Manchester's main memorial to its war dead. In Sackville Park you will find the Alan Turing Memorial which commemorates his role as the father of modern computing. Mr and Mrs Charles Phelps Taft of Cincinnati Ohio presented the City of Manchester with a statue of Abraham Lincoln by George Gray Barnard to mark the part that Lancashire played in the cottin famine and American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 and this can be found in the eponymous Lincoln Square.
