Information on London Fenchurch Street Station

London Fenchurch Street station is close to the heart of the City of London, tucked away amid the financial and shipping houses just north of the River Thames, the City shunned the original London & Blackwell Railway which was forced to strt from the Minories instead. From there it operated a cable haulage line designed to compete with the down river steamers and following a route used by todays Docklands Light Railway. On 2 August 1841 the city authorities eventually relented and the L&B Line was extended to Fenchurch Street. Eight years later when the line was linked with its ECR and NLR neighbours, conventional haulage took over from the cable haulage previously used.

The 1841 station by Sir William Tite was rebuilt in 1854 when the iron roof was carried forward to a siezable, single arch frontage pediment. The station facade is of Grey stone brick. In the 1960s a flat owning over the entrance was replaced with a zig zag canopy seen today. Eleven round arched windows sit above the canopy, and above these is the station clock.

Although modest in size, the station came to carry a substantial volume of commuter traffic in the hands of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway and later the LMS. The Southend excursion business was also significant and the line always had strong shipping connections, including boat trains to Tilbury and a special contract for freight from Tilbury Docks to the Commercial Road warehouse.

On 6 November 1961 the first electric multiple unit rolled into London Fenchurch Street station, this was to be the end of the 'Tibury Tanks' that had seen many years of service on the LT&SR.

London Fenchurch Street station is the smallest terminus station in London, with only four platforms arranged on two islands, and elevated on a viaduct. It is the most intensively operated terminus station in London, but has no direct link to a LOndon Underground station.

There are two station entrances, with the main entrance to Fenchurch Place, and the other entrance at Crosswall (also known as Tower entrance) close to the Tower of London, with access to Tower Hill Underground station and Tower Gateway DLR station, Aldgate Underground station is also nearby. Fenchuch Street station is only two miles east of London Charing Cross station.

It is also one of seventeen United Kingdom stations managed by Network Rail.
