Information on Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Liverpool John Lennon Airport was formerly know as Speke Airport and RAF Speke, and is located adjacent to the Estuary of the river Mersey, 7.5 Miles (12Km) South East of the City Centre with easy access from the A561 and Junction 6 of the M62 or Junction 12 of the M56. The airport was renamed in 2002 In honor of the late John Lennon, a founding member of the Liverpudlian band the beatles, 22 years after Lennon's death. A 7 Foot (2.1m) tall bronze statue of the local icon stands overlooking the check in hall and on the roof is painted the airport's motto, which is a line from Lennon's song "Imagine": Above us, only sky". A large scale work of art namely the Yellow Submarine was also installed on a traffic island at the entrance to the airport.
The Airport was built in part of the grounds of Speke Hall, hence its original name, scheduled flights started in 1930 with services by Imperial Airways via Barton Airport, Manchester, to Croydon Airport, London, although not officailly opened until 1933. But it wasn't until the late 1930's that a distinctive passenger terminal, control tower and two large aicraft hangers were built. Like many other airports during World War II control was taken over by the Royal Air Force and the airport changed to RAF Speke. Rootes had a shadow factory at Speke and produced the following bombers for the war campaign Bristol Blenheims, Handley Page Halifaxes. The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation also assembled many types of aircraft at the site including Hudson's and Mustang's, these having been shipped over from the United States to Liverpool Docks. RAF Speke was also the home of the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit.
VE-Day saw normal Civil Airline Operations resume at Speke Airport.
Liverpool City took over control of the airport on 1st January 1961 and in the mid 1970's transfered to Merseyside County Council, ten years later it was to change hands again to the five Merseyside Councils following the abolition of the Merseyside Councy Council. A new modern passenger terminal opened in 1986, and saw the closure of the original 1930s building.
The original art deco terminal building that was listed as a Grade II building has been renovated and adapted to become the Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel, with some segments of the original aprons and taxiways becoming car parking and a home for the bodyshell of a retired passenger airliner "Jetstream 41".
Ownership of the airport was again to change hands in 1990 when it was privatised with British Aerospace taking a 76% shareholding in the new company and subsequently became a wholly owned subsidary of Peel Holdings Ltd.
