Information on Liverpool

The Port of Liverpool is the name for the enclosed 7.5 mile dock system that runs from Herculaneum Dock to Seaforth Dock in the City of Liverpool, Merseyside England on the East side of the River Mersey and combined with the dock facilities built around the Great Float of the Wirral Peninsula, located on the West side of the river.

Mersey Docks and Harbour Company operate the working docks and British Waterways operate the docks South of the Pier Head.

Liverpool's dock also dominates Britain's container trade with North America and also serves over 100 other non EU destinations including, Africa, Australia, China, India, the Middle East and South America and is the UK's leading gateway for imports of grain and animal feed, the export of recycled metal and freight movements between Britain and Ireland. The operational docks (1,200 Acres) on both banks of the River Mersey also handle timber and forest products, some delivered daily by rail from Germany and Italy via the Channel Tunnel, 11 Million tonnes of crude oil for Shell's Stanlow Refinery in Cheshire, 3 Million tonnes of coal imported per year, 1 million tonnes of edible oils and fats, cocoa, steel, copper, aluminium, granite, chemicals and general cargo, plus three quarters of a million passengers using Irish Sea Ferry services to Ireland and the Isle of Man and the growing number of cruise ships.

As one of the largest cities in the UK, Liverpool is an important centre of trade and commerce and in recent years has undergone an extensive redevelopment program to coincide with its status as European Capital of Culture 2008, and reflecting the city's importance in the development of the world's trading system and dock technology Liverpool's waterfront was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
