Information on Lewes Station

The first railway station in Lewes was Friar's Walk and opened on 8 June 1846, when the Brighton, Lewes & Hastings Railway's line arrived from the east. With the arrival of the line from Keymer Junction in 1847 further modifications were made to the platforms. Ten years later the station was replaced due to the complex of the jumbled up lines, and on 17 June 1889 the present Lewes station complex was opened providing better platform interchanges.
The 1889 station buildings sport the typical LB&SCR wooden lantern above a hipped roof and surrounded by plenty of decoration, a parapet, acorn finals and rounded chimneys. The single storey main block is in cream brick and well decorated. The station has a cafe and newsagent and from the ticket hall leads an angle footbridge onto the central 'Vee' shaped platform an then onto the outer ones.
One of the former coastal line platforms has been filled in but its position is still apparent.
