Information on Leicester Station
The Leicester & Swannington Railway is numbered among Britain's railway pioneers and on 17 July 1832 opened the first section of its line, from Leicester to Bagworth. Midland Counties Railway issued its plans in 1833 for routes from Derby, Nottingham, and Pinxton and on to join London and Birmingham at Rugby. On 5 May 1840 it reached Leicester from Trent, on 30 June of the same year opened the Rugby portion. As part of the Midland Railway, the MCR system was linked to London from 1857 and direct to St Pancras from 1867-68. The London & North Western, Great Northern and Great Central companies all opened lines to Leicester but only three of the former eight radiating routes now carry passengers.
The Leicester & Swannington had a station of sorts on the west side of Leicester, this was replaced after the 1893 rerouting of the L&S, it successor lasted until 1928. The original, substantial single platform MCR station was located in Campbell Street and was first used on 4 May 1840, when steam engine 'Leopard' arrived from Nottingham hauling a train of four first and six second class carriages. All that remains of the first station are a pair of Egyptian looking gateposts in Campbell Street.
In 1892 the present site in London Road 1/2 mile from the city centre was brought into use.
The GNR's Belgrave Road closed on 29 April 1957 and the ex GCR Central station on 5 May 1969.
The Midland Railway completely rebuilt the station in 1894 to a design by architect Charles Trubshaw. The station frontage on London Road remains as a well preserved late Victorian building, but the interior of the booking hall and the structures on the platforms were reconstructed by British Rail in the 1970s.
Travel agency magnate Thomas Cook made his first excursions from Leicester station, 100 meters west of the station, on the pavement is a statue of Cook.
Leicester lies on the London St Pancras Midland Main Line and with the new Eurostar International services from St Pancras International, Leicester has almost direct links to the continent.
The station currently has four platforms, Network Rail has plans to increase this to eight and thus relieve the current bottle neck.
Leicester is a thriving city, close to the M1 motorway, with a large ethnic minority population, made up of a large South Asian community, and has many Hindu, Sikh and Muslim places of worship. Leicester is also a centre for higher education with, Leicester University, De Montfort University and Loughborough University, all based in the region.
