Information on Lancaster Station

Lancaster was connected to the railway system  on 25 June 1840 when the Lancaster & Preston Lunction Railway opened its line south to meet the North Union Railway at Preston. This gave Lancashire's historic country Town a rail route through to London and a station at the top of Penny Street.

The station was initially called Lancaster Greaves, and later 'Old'.Six years on 22 September 1846, the Lancashire & Carlisle Railway opened northwards making the station potentially redundant. The new railway left the L&PJ just south of the Old station and passed west of the castle hill from which its station took its name.

From 1 August 1849 passengers ceased to use the Old station and it became a goods depot until 1967.

In 1846 Sir William Tite produced an elegant station for the Lancashire & Carlisle Railway, matching its castle neighbour.

Lancaster railway station is on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Glasgow Central, and has five platforms currently in use.
