Ipswich railway station lies on the Great Eastern Main Line 68 3/4 miles east of London Liverpool Street station towards Norwich.
Ipswich is a traditional station with a modern role as an interchange point between inter-city services and local routes. As a junction station, two lines to Felixstowe and Lowestoft (East Suffolk Line) diverge from the main line north of the station.
In 1846 the Eastern Union Railway opened to a terminus in Ipswich, the present through station dates from 1860, and in 1883 the Great Eastern Railway added the island platforms. To the immediate south (London Side) of Ipswich station is the only tunnel on the whole of the Great Eastern Main Line, and was completed in 1846 by engineer Peter Bruff, who also built Ipswich Station.
All passenger trains to go London Liverpool Street (to the South), Norwich, Felixstowem Lowestoft, Peterborough and Cambridge (to the North). Trains are operated by NX and Great Eastern. NX Anglia operating express trains to London and NX Great Eastern operating stopping service to London, using a variety of trains and railway stock.
There is also a large amount of freight running through the station from the docks and opposite platform 4 a locomotive stabling and refueling yard normally containing Freightliner Class 66, 86 and 90 locomotives, DB Schenker Class 66s and D.R.S Class 20s.

Platform 2 - through trains to London from Norwich, Lowestoft, Peterborough and trains starting at Ipswich Platform 3 - through trains to Norwich, Lowestoft and Peterborough from London. Platform 4 - Service to Cambridge, some starting services to Lowestoft/Peterborough Platform 4 - Peak times from London to Norwich, Lowestoft and Peterborough

2 express tph to London Liverpool Street, calling at Manningtree, Colchestr, Chelmsford and Stratford or Shenfield alternately.
2 tph to Norwich calling at Diss and Stowmarket (once an hour) using Class 90 electric locomotives, Mk 3 hauled coaching stock and DVT.
1 tph to London, calling at Colchester, Witham, Chelmsford and Shenfield - using Class 170 DMUs, sometimes Class 321s, 360s or 317s cover the Ipswich to London stretch, with a DMU continuing onwards from Ipswich.
1 tph to Cambridge and a service every 2 hours to Peterborough. Both serving Bury St Edmunds, with Peterborough services continuing via Ely. On Sundays, some of these services from Cambridge are extended to Harwich International. All services use Class 153, 156 or 170 DMUs.
1 tph to Lowestoft via East Suffolk Line to Felixstowe via the Felixstowe Branch Line - using Class 153, 156, 170 DMUs.
2 tpd to Harwich International, connecting with ferry services Hoek Van Holland as part of the Dutchflyer service - using Class 321s for services terminating at Ipswich or Class 153, 156 for services continuing to Cambridge.
