  • Information on Hull Paragon Station

A Hull City Council plague on the station at Hull reads, "Paragon station opened 1848, substantially enlarged to a design by William Bell 1904, was the principle passenger station of the North Eastern Railway which, with its docks, cartage, hotel and shipping interests was a major local employer". The station took over from an 1840 one built by Hull's first railway, the Hull & Selby. It was the work of G.T.Andrews whose classic facade, with its supplementary terrace and ens buildings, can still be seen on the south side, and who added a hotel nearby.

The station was originally opened as Hull Paragon Street Station on 8 May 1848 by the York and North Midland Railway as a centrally located railway terminus complete with a three bay pitched roof trainshed. In 1854 the Y&NMR merged with the North Eastern Railway, who in turn renamed the station Hull Paragon.

Hulls original services from Leeds/York and the Scarborough line more traffic was added with the opening  of the Withersea (1854) and Hornsea (1864) branches with increased shipping activity and with new routes from York and Doncaster, until rebuilding became essential, this was carried out  1903-04. This increased the platforms to ten, plus four excursion platforms and altered them emphasis to the present frontage where a new booking hall and service buildings were provided. In 1922 the NER was merged with its rival company the Hull & Barnsley Railway, two year later its trains transferred from Hull Cannon Street to Hull Paragon. Then in 1955 the H&B route was closed. During the 1960s the lines to Withensea, Hornse and Weighton also closed.

Hull Paragon survived two World Wars and subsequent decades of demolition and redevelopment which swept through the city of Hull taking most of its architectural heritage along the way. On September 16 2007 a new multimodal transport interchange was opened at Hull Paragon station, incorporating a new central bus station, and the new St Stephen's shopping interchange. On March 5 2009 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived via the Royal Train to unveil a plague for Hull Paragon station.

In 2007 at the HSBC Rail Business Awards, First TransPennie Express received the award for Station Excellence.
