Information on Hull

Hull ferry port is located in the City of Kingston upon Hull which is situated on the north bank of the Humber estuary in the East Riding of Yorkshire and 25 miles from the North Sea.

Kingston upon Hull is 154 miles north of London near the east coast of the United Kingdom with the city centre west of the River Hull and close to the Humber.

Access to Hull is via the M62 motorway/A63 and provides a link to the cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds. This route also forms part of the E20 European road route.

The Humber Bridge is a single span suspension toll bridge that links Hull with Lincolnshire and is fifth on the list of World’s longest single span bridges.

Hull as it’s commonly known has served as a market town, military supply port, trading hub, fishing and whaling centre and industrial metropolis, and although the fishing industry is in decline the city remains a very busy port handling cargo and freight with the port operations run by Associated British Ports.

Roll-on Roll-off ferries operated by P&O provide daily overnight sailings from King George Dock to Zeebrugge in Belgium and Rotterdam in Holland. The services to Rotterdam are worked by the largest ferries operating from the United Kingdom, the Pride of Rotterdam and the Pride of Hull and handle over a million passengers each year.

In 1983 the former Humber Street Docks in the centre of the city were reopened after refurbishment with 270 berths for yachts and small sailing craft.

Princes Quay Shopping Centre was built on stilts over Prince’s Dock in the heart of the city and consists of three decks and over 100 retailers. It was also constructed with large windows to give visitors panoramic views of Hull Marina and the dock.

Several well known British companies have their facilities based in the city including BP, Smith & Nephew, Seven, Seas and Reckitt Benckiser, with the health care sector working closely with the University of Hull and its Institute of Woundcare and the Hull York Medical School.

The city has three main theatres, Hull New Theatre, Hull Truck Theatre and the Northern Theatre Company.

In the heart of the Old Town on the High Street is Hull’s Museum Quarter consisting of Wiberforce House, the Arctic Corsair, the Hull and east Riding Museum and the Streetlife Museum, of Transport. Other visitor attractions include the Ferens Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum, the Spun Lightship, the Yorkshire Water Museum and Gallery and the Deep a large underground aquarium situated at Sammy’s Point on the River Hull at the junction with the Humber estuary.

Hull is the only City in the United Kingdom to have its own independent telephone network company Kingston Communications that was formed in 1902, its distinctive cream phone boxes can be seen throughout the city.

Kingston Communications Stadium is home to the Hull City Tigers who were promoted in 2008 to the English Football Premier League.

Hull is also home to two teams that play in the Rugby Super League, Hull who share Kingston Communications Stadium with the Hull City Tigers Football Club and Hull Kingston Rovers who play rugby at Craven Park in East Hull. East Hull, West Hull, Hull Dockers and Hull Isberg all play in the National Conference League.

Hull Vikings speedway team are the most successful sporting team in Hull’s history yet remain without a home having started life as the Hull Angels at Hedbon on the outskirts of Hull between 1947 and 1949, returning after a long layoff to race as the Vikings at the Boulevard the former ground of Rugby league side Hill FC. Then returning again after another long gap to race at Craven Park racing in the Elite League in 1999 but their most successful season came in the Premier League in 2004 when they completed the treble by becoming Premier League Champions, Knock-Out Cup Winners and the Craven Shield and one year later closed due to financial problems. Riders that rode for the Vikings include Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs and Egon Muller who were all Speedway World Champions plus other World stars including Kelly and Shawn Moran, Dennis Sigalos, Billy Sanders, Reg Wilson and Paul Thorp.

Other sports in the City of Hull include Hull Stingrays ice hockey team who play at Hull Arena in the Elite Ice Hockey League and Greyhound racing which takes place at the Boulevard Stadium.
