Information on Huddersfield Station

The imposing station backing St George's Square at Huddersfield carries the coats of arms of two railway companies, the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway & Canal Co and the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. The former represented a combination of railway and canal interests and beat off several rival schemes to open a line north of Huddersfield on 3 August 1847, and south to Stalybridge on August 1 two years later.
The H&M engaged James Pigott Pritchett to design an impressive station to go with their new railway. Part of the station was opened 1847 and the remainder in 1850, the same year in which the LYR sponsored Huddersfield & Sheffield Junction Railway opened another scenic route through the high country to Barnsley, plus a branch to Holmfirth.
Well-positioned for the town, Huddersfield station comprises a 146 ft frontage leading to the Up platform. A Down island is reached by subway and beyond lies the former goods yard, now just sidings.
The J.P.Pritchett building comprises a two storey entrance portico in the Corinthian style with six front and two side columns. Eight columns sections on either side are thn completed by the four column end pavilions , the one at the northend bearing the H&M coat of arms and the one on the southend those of the LYR.
There are two public houses, the Head of Steam and King's Head (previously known as The Station Tavern), each side of the main entrance and within the main station frontage. Inside the station there is a booking office, train timetables, a newsagent.
