Holyhead is the British port for the principle surface route to Dublin. Serving the town of Holyhead (Welsh name: Caergybi) on Holy Island, Anglesey. Its the Western Terminus of the North Wales Coast LIne and is managed by Arriva Trains Wales.

The era of Holyhead's main growth began when John Rennie began building a new harbour in 1810. In 1826 a bridge by Thomas Telford was put in place accross the Menai Strait to replace the troublesome ferry crossing of earlier times.

The arrival of the Chester & Holyhead Railway which opened to a temporary station at the port on 1 August 1848, with the Britannia Bridge coming into use two years latr to complete the scenic route from Chester along the North Wales Coast. In 1870 the Break Breakwater was added and ten years later a new station with a hotel replaced the 1851 location at the south end of the inner harbour. The present station was opened by the LNWR on 17 June 1880 and still retains its overall roof. Originally with four platforms, but now only three in use, with the tracks having been lifted from alongside platform 3. On the western side of the station is platform 1, separated from the other two by the ferry terminal buildings and inner harbour is normally used by through trains to London Euston. Other services use platform two, with platform four being outside in the elements it only has occassional use.

Following the transfer of the rail container traffic to Liverpool in the early 1990s, the container terminal at Holyhead station closed down before finally being demolished
