Information on Heysham

Heysham is a large coastal village with a ferry port serving the Isle of Man and Ireland near Lancaster in the County of Lancashire, England and overlooking Morecombe Bay.

Heysham is the site of two Nuclear Power Stations, Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 are both advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) type with two reactors each and are visible landmarks from hills in the surrounding area. The reactors are from the second generation of British gas-cooled reactors using graphite as the neutron moderator and carbon dioxide as coolant.

Heysham 1 commenced operations with its first reactor in 1983 with the second one coming into operation the following year and shares its design with Hartlepool Power Station.

Heysham 2 commenced operations in 1988 and shares its reactor design with Torness Nuclear Power Station with the reactors supplied by Nation Nuclear Corporation and the turbines by Northern Engineering Industries (NEI) of Gosforth in Newcastle upon Tyne.
St Patricks Chapel in the village of Heysham is a ruined building which stands on a headland above St Peter’s Church and is Grade 1 Listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument with the ruins dating from the 8th or 9th century and built of sandstone rubble. The stone graves found in the ruins of the ancient chapel which are thought to date from the 11th century feature on the cover of the Black Sabbath CD, The Best of Sabbath.
 
Heysham Harbour was built in 1900 with Heysham Port providing ferry services to the Isle of Man as well as freight services to Ireland and services for the eastern Irish Sea and Morecombe Bay gas fields. A Seacat service to Belfast started in 1999.

The port of Heysham is served by the Heysham Port railway station a terminus station of the Morecombe Branch Line from Lancaster with one train each way per day which runs to and from Leeds.
