Hereford continues to represent a major rail facility for a large and pleasant are of the Anglo Welsh border country. In the past it had three main line stations on five radiating routes. Goods train traffic began on the Shrewsbury & Hereford Railway's line from Ludlow mid 1852, with a through passenger service commencing on 6 December the following year.

The S&H trains used the present station site, then occupied by a private house which gave its Barr's Court name to the station complex which was developed to accommodate additional traffic from the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford Railway's line to the south and the Great Western Railway route from Gloucester.

Hereford station comprises a Victorian Gothic building, designed by R.E Johnson, a main Down side platform with a period footbridge leading to the Up island platforms. Serving the city of Hereford and managed by Arriva Trains Wales.

An additional pair of relief lines run between platforms 2 and 3, these are used by EWS goods services.
