Information on Glasgow Queen Street Station

Glasgow Queen Street opened on 18 February 1842 and is the smaller of the city's two Main LIne terminus stations. Standing between George Street to the south and Cathedral Street Bridge to the north, at the northern end of Queen street and adjacent to George Street.
Built by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, then in 1865 the E&GR was taken over by the North British Railway, then in 1923 it became part of the LNER group.
Access to the station is via a tunnel of 1 mile and 33 yards built at the insistance of the Port Dundas canal owners and with a 1 in 42 gradient and until 1909 trains were hauled up on a rope operated by a stationary engine. Experiments were carried out between 1844-48 using banking engines. Modern trains have no difficulty with gradient.

As a result of the Beeching axe the rival Caledonian's adjacent Buchanan Street Station closed on 7 November 1966, its services to Stirling, Perth, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen transferring to Queen Street.

Like its near neighbour Central station, Queen street also has a High Level and Low Level platforms, the high level station the larger of the two and the terminus for routes to Edinburgh and North of the Central Belt of Scotland.

The low level station is the most central city centre stop on the North Clyde Line of the Glasgow suburban electric network and was built before the Glasgow Subway.

There have been various schemes to link the Queen Street station with Glasgow Central station over the years, as passengers traveling from the north of Scotland to the south and vice versa via Glasgow have to cross the city centre. The Glasgow subway serves neither station.

A Crossrail investigation into the use of a disused freight line which links High Street to the Gorbals area is due for completion in 2009.
