Information on Glasgow Prestwick Airport

Prestwick Airport as its mainly known is located North of the town of Prestwick South Ayrshire with about a 30 minute drive from Glasgow and a 90 minute drive from Edinburgh with easy access from the M77/A77 from Glasgow and the A71/A77 from Edinburgh and because of its location it is the only airport in the United Kingdom that doesn't suffer from fog. It is the largest of Scotlands four commercial airports in physical terms, but it comes in in fourth place behind Glasgow International, Edinburgh Airport and Aberdeen Airport in relation to the number of passenger traffic aircraft that it handles.

Elvis Presley visited the Airport in 1960 when the United States Army Transport plane carrying him home stopped to refuel, this is considered the only time that the 'KING' ever stepped foot in the UK whilst on his way home from Germany, a lounge bearing his name, and a marker reflecting this event were inaugurated in 2006.

From the 1960s to the 1980s Prestwick was the Transatlantic Gateway. Budget airlines like Ryanair helped to drive passenger growth through the airport and in 2006 Prestwick handled over 3 million passengers. Prestwick began life in 1932 as a training field and by the end of 1935 it had its first hanger along with offices and a control tower. David Fowler McIntyre was the original owner who also owned  Scottish Aviation and had backing from the Duke of Hamilton. Passenger facilities were added in 1938 and in 1964 the Queen Mother opened the All New Terminal Building, this coinsided with a runway extension and parallel taxiway.

In the beginning, Prestwick was the only Scottish airport allowed to operate a transatlantic link, largely due to the very benign weather conditions on the Ayrshire coast. Indeed, with a much lower incidence of fog than any other airport in Great Britain due to a geological anomaly, Prestwick has the reputation of being "Britain's only fog-free airport". This is perhaps one reason it managed to avoid total closure when it appeared that BAA seemed to be running down operations. It was also partly a political decision to silence those that questioned why Glasgow needed two airports when Glasgow Corporation had already invested money building Glasgow Airport.

Although British Airways had ceased regular passenger operations in the late 1970s, BA continued to intermittently use Prestwick as a site for pilot training, especially for training Concorde pilots. Concorde became a semi-regular visitor to the airport, and indeed BA and a number of other major airlines still use Prestwick for pilot training.

Prestwick Airport is also considered to be the only piece of United Kingdom territory on which Elvis Presley ever set foot, when the United States Army transport plane carrying him home stopped to refuel in 1960, whilst en route from Germany. A lounge, bearing his name, and a marker reflecting this event were inaugurated in 2006.

A bi-annual airshow used to be held at Prestwick Airport, the first being held 30 September 1967, the last being 1992, with no effort to revive the shows.

In the 1990's the airport faced an uncertain future as BAA decided to consolidate its portfolio of uk airports when it was privatised, transferring all its Scottish transatlantic departures to Glasgow International Airport and selling off Prestwick to the private sector, but in 1994 Prestwick Airport took a shrewd move in building its own railway station. As a result Ryaniar opened a route to the Prestwick from Dublin. The following year another route opened to London resulting in rapid growth of no-frills airlines and in turn Prestwick Airport grew larger than it had ever been under state ownership. With Ryanair using the airport as one of its maintenance hubs and serving more than 20 destinations, other budget airlines followed.

New Zealand investment company Infratil who own Prestwick Airport along with Wellington International Airport and Kents International Airport at Manston Ramsgate have continued to invest and refurbish the airport and along with todays no-frills budget airlines still plays a strategic role as a refueling point for the USAF, RAF and Canadian Forces Air Command military aircraft along with the vast majority of Scotlands 747 Freighter Traffic landing at Prestwick.
