Information on Glasgow International Airport

In 1932 the Royal Air Force opened Abbotsinch near Paisley in Renfrewshire with the City Of Glasgow 602 Squadron being based there. 1936 saw the arrival of the 6 Auxillary Group, Bomber Command with the squadron flying Supermarine Spitfires until their removal in October 1939. 1940 saw the arrival of a torpedo training unit for training both the RAF and Royal Navy crews. August 11 1943 saw the base handed over solely to the Royal Navy when it became known as HMS Sanderling. In October 1963 the Royal Navy left and HMS Sanderling's Ship's bell was presented to the new airport and a bar in the airport was also named the Sanderling Bar thus keeping a link with the former Naval Base and the new Airport.

Glasgow did have another airport in the Dean Park area of Renfrew which was 2 miles (3Km) from the City but the Glasgow Corporation wanted a new and bigger airport
so Abbotsinch took over on may 2nd 1966, the M8 motorway now occupies the site of the former main runway, and the original Art Deco Terminal site is now occupied by a Tesco Supermarket. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the airport on 27th June 1966 and in 1975 ownership transfered to Bristish Airports Authority (BAA) and in the late 1980's the airport changed its name to Glasgow International Airport.

Glasgow International airport is the busiest of Scotlands three international airports with 40 airlines using its 2 runways and flying to over 90 destinations.

Glasgows music scene profile has been boosted by recent acts Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Biffy Clyro, the Ratellis and Glasvegas. Oasis were spotted playing in Glasgows King Tut's Wah Wah Hut music venue and  signed by Glaswegian record mogul Alan McGee. Other music venus include
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the SECC, Barrowlan, ABC, the Carling Academy and the Queen Margaret Union.

Glagsow has four football teams, Celtic who play at Celtic Park, Rangers at Ibrox Stadium, Partick Thistle at Firhill Stadium, and Queen's Park at Hampden Park.

In 1928 Speedway arrived in the city with the first venue being The Olympic Stadium in Dalserf Street, formerly Camlachie Street but it wasn't until 1946 that the Glasgow Tigers would be established and based at White City Stadium Ibrox close to Rangers FC. Moving on in 1969 to Hampden Park, in 1973 the club moved to Coatbridge at Cliftonhill home of Albion Rovers FC, thus becoming the Coatbridge Tigers, 1977 saw them change back to the Glasgow Tigers as they relocated again, this time to Blantyre firstly at Blantyre Sports Stadium which also hosted greyhounds, then another move in 1982 to Craighead Park. 1987 saw the Tigers leave Glasgow and race for the first tim in England as they'd lost their home and relocated to Derwent Park Workington in Cumbria. 1988 saw them move into Shawfield Stadium, Rutherglen and the Tigers acheived the double by winning the Premier League Championship and Knockout Cup in 1993 and 1994, then in 1999 the club moved to its present Ashfield Stadium in Possilpark.
