Information on Glasgow Central Station

The city of Glasgow has two main-line railway terminals, Glasgow Central being the larger of the two is the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, and managed by Network Rail.
Glasgow Central is the busiest railway station in the United Kingdom outside London, with over 34 million passengers arriving or departing from the station each year. Serving Southern towns and suburbs, Ayrshire and Clyde coasts, and inter-city services south of the border.
The original (High Level) station with its eight platforms, opened on 1 August 1879 and was on the north bank of the River Clyde, and it was linked to Bridge Street station by a railway bridge over Argyle Street, and a four track railway bridge which crossed the Clyde to the south.
In 1890 the station became too congested, this lead to the widening of the bridge over Argyle Street with the addition of a ninth platform on Argyle Street Bridge.
On 10 August 1896 Glasgow Central (Low Level platforms) opened, originally planned as a separate station to serve the Glasgow Central Underground Railway.
By 1900 passenger numbers had increased by 5 million since the first extension had been completed in 1890. Passenger usage for Glasgow Central was 16 million per annum on the High Level platforms and 6 million on the Low Level platforms, Glasgow Central was again too small.
Work began in 1901 on rebuilding the original station and was completed in 1905 with the station being extended over the top of Argyle Street, increasing the platforms to 13, with an additional eight track railway bridge built over the Clyde, this lead to Bridge Street station being closed.
Glasgow Central High Level stations platforms are covered by a large steel ridge roof, and has a spacious concourse.
