Information on Gatwick Airport Station

The Gatwick Airport location started life in 1891 serving racegoers and bearing the name Gatwick Racecourse, it originally only opened on race days. Facilities at the station included passing loops and holding sidings for race trains, during the First World War the sidings were extended to accommodate munitions trains that were heading for Newhaven harbour.
It then began a new career when a 30 September 1935 a new station was opened to serve the infant airport. Initially called Tinsley Green and provided with 63 services a day, the station then changed its name to Gatwick Airport one year later on 1 June. The 1935 station lasted until 1958 when it was replaced with the present one, on the site of the original Gatwick Racecourse and rebuilt to its present form in 1967-68.
