Exeter has seven railway stations, the main inter-city station being St Davids, which was opened on 1 May 1844 by the Bristol and Exeter Railway (B&ER). Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as a single sided station, on the northern side of the city, just over a 1/4 mile away from the city centre, and lying on the West of England main line 173 1/4 miles from London Paddington Station.

Exeter St Davids has six platforms, beyond platform six is a signal box and next to this is Exter TMD (Traction Maintenance Depot) where DMU sets (Diesel Multiple Units) on local services are refulled. A former goods shed nolonger in railway use stands near the TMD.

Exeters other main station, Exeter Central serves Local services as well as trains from London Waterloo, and only a 5 minute walk from the city centre.

The other five Exeter stations are all suburban, with Exeter St Thomas serving the St Thomas and Haven Banks areas of the city and served by local services to Paignton.

Pinhoe station is on the eastern edge of the city and served by services to London Waterloo.

St James Park serves Exeter City Foot Ball Clubs ground and student areas with local services to Exmouth.

Polsloe Bridge serves the Whipton area of the city and like St James Park has local services to Exmouth.

Digby & Sowton station serves the Digby housing developments and Sowton Industrial Estate, and also local services to Exmouth.

There are two direct routes to London from St Davids.

Great Western Main line to London Paddington by First Great Western Trains.
West of England Main Line to London Waterloo by South West Trains.

Long distance services operated by Cross Country to Birmingham New Street, North of England and Scotland.

Some trains terminate at St Davids, especially those from Waterloo, roughly one third continue to Paignton, Plymouth or penzance.

Three local routes converge at St Davids, the Avocet Line from Exmouth. Tarka Line from Barnstaple, Riviera Line from Paignton.

Trains from Exmouth generally continue to either Barnstaple or Paignton.

Less frequent service:
Night Riviera sleepers from London Paddington to Penzance.
