Information on Exeter International Airport

From its humble beginnings as a grass field for a flying club to todays International Airport, Exeter has seen many occupants, as RAF Exeter it played an important role during the Battle of Britain as two dozen fighter squadrons were stationed there with just about all the fighter types being present up to 1944.
Following squadrons were base at Exeter during the 1940s
* NO 213 Squadron. * No 87 Squadron. * No 601 Squadron.
Exeter was also known as USAAF Station 463 as it met the requirements of the USAAF and the 440th troop was based there with its 70 plus Douglas C47 and C53 Skytrain Transporter Aircarft used for paratroop dropping. The 440th was a group of Ninth Air Force's 5oth Troop Carrier Wing, IX Troop Carrier Command.
Post war the airfield tenants were Walruses of an RAF Air Sea Rescue and glider training units until Exeter was reclaimed by Fighter Command and 329 Squadron made its home there until the early 1945s with its Supermaine Spitfires, the following spring saw Meteors and Mosquitos aircraft.
1952 saw the first scheduled services to the Channel Islands with charter flights to other destinations following on. 1980 saw various improvements to the airfield including a runway extension and new terminal building, this helped Exeter establish itself as an important airport in the West Country.
The airport has good access from the M5 and A30.
Although there is no Railway Station at the airport, Exeter has two mainline stations, Exeter St.Davids for direct services to London Paddington and Exter Central for direct services to London Watreloo, both are 5 miles from Exeter Airport.

Exeter City has a Cathedral founded in 1050, Ruins of Rougemont Castle built after the Norman Conquest, The Guildhall which is the oldest municipal building in England and still in use, Custom House which is the oldest brick building surviving in the city, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, the Phoenix Arts Centre and Spacex a modern art gallery.

Exeter was also home to the Exeter Falcons speedway team who raced at the County Ground from 1947 to 2005 when the Rugby Club sold the ground off for redevelopment. Alan Trump has been given planning permission for a new track and stadium that is due to open in the near future at the Exeter Racecourse Haldon.
Two notable riders from Exeters past include triple World Champion (1969, 1970, 1972) Ivan Mauger and Great Britains last Speedway World Champion (2000) Mark Loram.
