Information on East Midlands Airport



East Midlands Airport is situated in Leicestershire near Castle Donington  in the triangle of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, all within a 30 mile radius of the airport. Access is via Junction 24A of the M1 Motorway. The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) own the airport, they are the largest UK owned airport group. East Midlands Airport is also the largest unrestricted airport in the UK and the second largest freight airport with many freight operations taking place at night. EMA was originally owned by the MoD as RAF Castle Donington and decommissioned in 1946, being renamed as EMA in 1965 to reflect the area of the UK that it served. The airport has seen various improvements to its runway and terminal since opening to passenger transport in 1965 with 2000 seeing a new business park constructed next to the airport and a new £35m cargo facility for DHL Aviation. In 2002 "no frills" carriers arrived at EMA and Go Fly established a hub at the airport. By 2006 the airport became the twelfth highest inthe UK with freagrds to passenger numbers and in April 2007 passengers passed the five million mark.

A new station East Midlands Parkway opened in 2008 with a shuttle bus linking this new station with the EMA.
