Information on Durham Tees Valley Airport Airport

Durham Tees Valley Airport began life as RAF Station Goosepool, then in 1941 it changed to RAF Middleton St.George until its closure in 1963 when the airfield was put up for sale by the MoD and purchased by the late Cleveland County Council as they saw great potential for the airfield. In 1964 Mercury Airlines operated the first flight from the airport to Manchester and in  1966 the International Terminal was opened by Princess Margaretha of Sweden. The first flight to London Heathrow took place in November 1966 operated by British Midland, a route that still exists today. By 1990 British Midland operated the one millionth aicraft movement from Durham Tees Valley to London Heathrow. Cleveland County Council disbanded in 1996 and the airport ownership was divided amongst sevetal Borough Councils, in 2002 Peel Airports Ltd took a 75% share in airport ownership, the remaining 25% is owned by a consortium of local authorities consisting of Darlington, Stockto on Tees, Middlesborough, Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Councils.

The airport is located approximately 6 miles (10km) East of Darlington, 10 miles (16km) South West of Middlesborough and 24 miles (39km) South of Durham and is one of the smallest but fastest growing regional airports in the UK. Although there is only one runway and one terminal, 30 different airlines serving 80 destinations operate from Durham Tees Valley carrying over one million passengers every year.

Getting to the Airport.

Durham Tees Valley has its own Railway Station but is only served by two trains per week (ONLY on Saturdays with 1 Each Way), ranked in the five worst served railway stations in the UK in terms of the number of services calling. May 2005 saw the launch of the Sky Express bus service operated by Arriva North East that runs every hour during the day and  connects the airport with Darlington's Railway Station and Town Hall, this is a FREE service for bona fide passengers.

By road the airport is easily accessible from the A1(M), A19, A66 and A67.
