Information on Dover Ferry Terminal

The British seaport town of Dover is located in Kent on the southeast coast on the distinctive White Cliffs of Dover of England and dates back to the 17th Century.
Dover is only 21 miles from the port of Calais in France.
The Dover Harbour Board is the responsible authority for the running of the Port of Dover.
The English Channel is at its narrowest point in the straits of Dover and it’s also the busiest shipping lane in the world, ferries crossing between the United Kingdom and the Continent of Europe have to negotiate their way through a constant stream of ships of all sizes crossing their path.
A scheme called the ‘Dover Strait Traffic Separation Scheme’ controlled by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of HM Customs allots ships separate lanes and a safe passage through the strait.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s headquarters are based in Dover at Langdon Battery.
The Harbour is divided into two sections, the Eastern Docks for general passenger and freight ferries and the Western Docks for Cruise ships, about ½ mile apart.
Eastern Docks

There are nine docks with four ferry services to France and they include:
- P&O Ferries who operates 7 ships with up to 29 sailings daily to Calais.
- Sea France who operate 5 ships with up to 20 sailings daily to Calais.
- Norfolkline who operate 3 ships with up to 12 sailings daily to Dunkirk.
- LD Lines who operate 2 ships, 1 ferry and 1 Catermarran with up to 6 sailings daily to Boulogne.

Adjacent to the passenger terminal is Dover freight terminal which can be used for ships up to 590 ft (180m) in length.
Western Docks
Admiralty Pier was the former home for the ‘Golden Arrow’ and other cross channel boat trains from London Victoria to Dover Marine railway terminus station which was built by the SECR in 1914. The original station had four platforms under cover and was used until the end of the boat trains in the 1970s, the trains station stayed in use until it finally closed in 1994. The platforms have since been concreted over to form a covered car park, along with new buildings it can now berth up to 3 cruise ships.
From 1968 to the early 2000s the Western Docks were used by Hoverspeed and its Hovercraft service on cross-channel sailings but could not compete with Eurotunnel as they could only transport a small number of cars on every journey. Hoverspeed also ran a Catamaran service until 2005 when they were declared bankrupt.
SpeedFerries operated a single Catamaran SpeedOne service from 2004 to November 2008 and operating five daily sailings to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
The Hoverport has now been demolished and is due for re-development.
Dover’s cruise terminal is the second busiest cruise port in the United Kingdom and the eighth busiest north European cruise port. The cruise terminal has state-of-the-art facilities and award winning customer services.

The cruise terminal is used by the following operators.
- Chrystal Cruises.
- Fred Olsen.
- MSC Cruises.
- Norwegian Cruise Lines.
- Princes Cruises.
- Saga
Marina
The marina is located between the Western Docks and the Cruise terminal and the former Hoverport is now the entrance to the yacht harbour.
Dover is accessed by road via the M20/A20 from London via Folkestone and the M2/A2 from London via Canterbury and by trains from London Victoria and London Charing Cross to Dover Priory station situated in the town of Dover – A bus connects the station to the ports.
